A Foundation for Every Child: Housing Stability and Health Equity

Posted
Executive Summary Safe, stable, and affordable housing is foundational to children’s well-being and long-term success. Decades of research show that when families can access quality homes, children experience better health outcomes, stronger educational attainment, and improved economic mobility over the course of their lives.1 Yet for millions of families across the United States, safe and stable housing remains out of reach. Persistently high rent, stagnant wages, housing shortages, systemic discrimination, and ongoing disinvestment have left many families vulnerable to eviction and chronic housing instability. These challenges disproportionately affect families of color due to longstanding structural inequities in housing access and economic opportunities. Bold policy solutions are urgently needed to ensure every child has a stable foundation from which to grow and thrive.
